| Massive polling in Maqbool Bhat's village, Guru's boycott | | Healthy turnout, violence in Baramulla constituency | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, May 7: Amid healthy voter turnout from parts of North Kashmir, the Parliamentary constituency, proved more violent and hectic for polling staff due to eruption of violence throughout the day. The details collected reveal that at least two forceful bombs went off near a polling booth in volatile Palhalan of North Kashmir injuring two security personnel and later within minutes another low intensity IED which was found by security forces near the Government school was diffused. One teen aged youth got critically injured after a tear gas shell hit him in Bandipora district as according to the reports received clashes between youth and security forces remained on roads throughout the day in main town. Locals informed Early Times that injured youth namely Firdous Ahmad, was hit by a teargas smoke shell in Nebirapoar village and was later shifted to SKIMS for treatment. Palhalan Pattan of Baramulla District also witnessed ding dong battles throughout the day. The details reveal that clashes between youth and Central Police Forces broke out in Palhalan town of Baramulla forcing security forces to fire tear smoke shells towards youth to disperse them as according to police sources youth have been pelting stones towards polling booths since morning and creating a wave of fear in the area to stop people coming out to cast their votes. Not a single voter turned out in Duabgah which is the native village of Parliament convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, yet the situation was altogether different in the native village of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat who was also hanged in Tihar jail in 1984. The details reveal that all the four polling booths vide numbers 47, 48, 49 and 50 remained abuzz with voters. Lowest ever polling was recorded in Sopore Town. The details also reveal that besides some polling agents were beaten to pulp amid heavy stone pelting in many places protesters also locked down some polling stations in Sopore, forcing the authorities to relocate the stations in some places and wind up booths early in the day as well. Sources said that Polling booth numbers 23, 24 set up at Nadihal and idipora of Bomai village were locked by people from outside. Heavy stone pelting incidents were also received from Baramulla main town forcing authorities to shift polling booths from old town to other peaceful populated areas in the afternoon. According to the details since morning clashes erupted in various parts of old Town Baramulla. Locals of the area informed Early Times that intense stone pelting clashes between youth and forces remained order of the day today. The details reveal that all the five bridges connecting the Old Town with rest of the populated areas were sealed by security forces after youth started pelting stones on security forces deployed in the area, resulting in forces in retaliation fired tear smoke shells to disperse the protests. Pertinently till last reports came from all these areas stone pelting was going on at many places. |
