Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 7: While the increasing land encroachment is becoming a cause of concern among the people in Jammu who term it a part of bigger conspiracy to change the demography of the region, the State Government is totally sleeping over the issue.
According to sources the thousands of kanals of forest, revenue and Nazool as well as private land has been encroached by the mafia groups in league with the higher ups in Government and the officials of respective departments and despite the large scale protests by the masses there is no check on the same.
The land mafia is not active in Jammu district only by encroaching the forest land in Sidrah and By Pass area or Tawi Island but in Bajalta and Majalta areas as well as Samba and Kathua districts of region too where thousands of Kanals of State and forest land as well as the barren land belonging to people has been encroached upon, sources said.
This all is being done to change the demography of the region and the authorities are totally tight lipped over the issue, sources said, adding even the police is not entertaining the complaints of the people in various areas and refuse to register FIRs.
Sources said emboldened by the support from Government agencies, the land mafia which have encroached hundreds of kanals of land in Tawi Island broke the railing of the Fourth Tawi bridge in violation of rules and constructed a road to the area while the authorities are maintaining a stoic silence over the issue.
Sources said instead of removing these encroachments and taking action against those who dismantled the railing of fourth bridge on river Tawi to construct a road to the area the authorities are closing their eyes under the political pressure though there is a lot of public resentment against the same.
Sources said hardly two kilometres away from the same locality the land mafia has encroached the Government land and constructed the Kucha houses there which they are now converting into pucca houses.
Sources said in Bajalta area hundreds kanals of land has been encroached by mafia groups who have constructed their houses, set up dairy farms and were now harassing the local people. Even these land grabbers having nexus with anti social elements are involved in smuggling of cattle from the area by stealing the cows, oxen and buffaloes of local people during night and transporting the same to Kashmir Valley.
The land mafia groups which have come from different parts of the State have started setting up colonies in various areas after grabbing the forest as well as State land. Besides they have also grabbed the land of local people by changing the revenue records in connivance with revenue officials which has been a cause of concern for the people.
Sources said in Samba and Kathua districts too the land mafia has grabbed thousands Kanals of land on the banks of various rivers and established their tents and Kullas which are being converted into pucca houses by and by.
