| TD's lethargy renders Rajouri trekkers camps useless | | | Arun Singh Jammu, May 7: The half-hearted efforts of Tourism Department to promote adventure tourism can be gauged from the fact that the three base camps for trekkers at the constructed at a cost of Rs 1.69 crore in Rajouri district have been rendered useless as neither a trekking event nor publicity/ advertisement has been made till date. Sources told Early Times that for the promotion of adventure tourism in Rajouri area, Government of India (GoI) had sanctioned a project of construction of three base camps for trekkers at Darhal, Kotli and Kandi in 2007 under 'Destination development scheme' at a cost of Rs 1.79 crore (Rs 59.58 lakh each) for providing variety of tourism products to the tourists. They further said that the main objective to create a base camp at these places with facilities like public conveniences, dormitories, refreshing blocks, improvement of trekking path etc. from where the tourists could lead to nearby mountain peaks. Rajouri Development Authority (RDA) took up the project and incurred an expenditure of Rs 1.69 crore on construction of these assets. Surprisingly the structures created by the RDA were different from that envisaged in the Detail Project Reports (DPRs) to the extent that buildings with bedrooms and attached bathrooms, lobbies, kitchens etc. as facilities to stay and organize meetings etc. were created and no trekking path had been developed, they said. They further maintained that no trekking event had been organized by the concern authority. Moreover no publicity and advertisement had been made for organizing any trekking events in collaboration with groups/ firms organizing trekking events so that adventure tourism could be promoted as a result the buildings had not been put to any use. |
