| Parliamentary polls in JK conclude, all wait for May 16 | | | Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, May 7: As the last vote was cast in Baramulla and Ladakh parliamentary constituencies this evening in the fifth phase of polling, the process in the state came to a peaceful end after a hectic electioneering of nearly two months. The poll exercise in the state took off with the issuance of election notification on March 15 for the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat which went to poll under 1st phase in J&K on April 10. While Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat went to polls on April 10, the polling for Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency held in 2nd phase on April 17. Anantnag Lok Sabha seat went to polls under third phase on April 24 while the elections for Srinagar constituency were held in the fourth phase on April 30. In the five-phased long poll process, the fate of several prominent and high profile leaders of the state representing different political parties were locked in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which will remain in safe custody in different district headquarters till the morning of May 16when the process of declaration of results gets underway. Heavyweights whose fate is locked in EVMs include the likes of Union Ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad of Congress and Dr Farooq Abdullah of National Conference (NC), sitting MPs Madan Lal Sharma of Congress, Mehboob Beg of NC, Sharief-ud-din Shariq of NC, People's Democratic Party (PDP) president and MLA Mehbooba Mufti, Former Deputy Chief Minister and MLA Muzzafar Hussain Beig of PDP, State Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) president and MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma, PDP MLC Yashpal Sharma beside former Minister Tariq Hamid Qarra of PDP, former MP Thupstan Chhewang of BJP, former MLA and Panthers Party supremo Bhim Singh are few of those who were in the fray for one or the other parliamentary constituencies out of the total number of six in the state. For some of the contesting candidates, the wait for announcement of results was more than a month long while for the others it will be a matter of just few days. The candidates contesting in the fourth and fifth phases of polls were particularly fortunate as they did not have to go through the trial of waiting for a longer stretch of time to know what exactly is stored for their destiny. Now, with the declaration of results is just a week away, the anxious moments and butterflies in stomach for all the contesting candidates would bind to rise with each passing day till the D-Day on May 16. |
