Baramulla, Bandipora remain shut for third day

BARAMULLA, May 11: Complete shutdown was observed in different parts of North Kashmir's Baramulla, and Bandipora districts for third consecutive day, against the arrests of some local youth and elderly people who were found involved in beating and harassment of voters on May 8.
Shops and other business establishments were completely shut across north Kashmir. The schools, banks, and other institutions were also shut while public transport was also off the roads. In Baramulla all major roads leading to the main towns were sealed by police with concertina wire which presented a deserted look, While as cops and youth were engaged in ding dong battles.
According to sources "On Friday, residents of Staduim Coloney Baramulla alleged police highhandedness during nocturnal raids in locality. They accused police of ransacking three houses and seven vehicles. The allegation however was denied by police,
Meanwhile Early Times has learnt that a delegation of Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) led by, Vice Chairperson Mohammad Iqbal Tramboo, met the traders body 'Baramulla Traders Faderation ' on Sunday and held a joint conclusive meeting in which traders decided to call off strike from Monday.
"We will resume the business activities in town from Monday. The joint trade bodies took stock of situation in Baramulla and condemned the police highhandedness with a family of Stadium Colony. The decision to call off strike was announced after traders observed to give some time to administration to look into our demands", President Baramulla Beopar Mandal, Qazi Irshad Ahmad said.
He said that the DC Baramulla has assured the BTF that first class executive magistrate will be accompanying police if they need to raid any house at any point of time. "We have also cooperated saying that we don't condone violence and we will not create hurdles in normalizing law and order situation but our houses should not be ransacked and youth should not be arrested without following the proper procedures," he added.
The decision to call off strike come at a time when Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani had stated that there will be no strike till May 13. He had threatened to launch peaceful agitation if the raids were not stopped and arrestees were not released till May 13.
Meanwhile complete shutdown was also observed in Bandipora town against the arrest of around 25 youths who were detained under precautionary measures before Lok Sabah polls on charges of stone pelting. The traders meet with police department on Saturday had remained inconclusive. Locals and traders have been demanding release of all youth.
