| Anti-encroachment drive receives backlash | | 6 cops, 2 officers injured as land grabbers attack demolition squad | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mày 11: A former JMC corporator and NC leader instigated mob of encroachers to attack the JDA and Police teams that launched a demolition drive near Revenue Complex at Gole Gujral in accordance with the directives of the State High Court this evening. Six cops and two JDA officials were injured in the incident. The injured also included four CRPF personnnel. All the injured were rushed to GMC Hospital for treatment. According to source, tension prevailed in the area after an NC leader reached the area where the police had pressed a JCB in service to remove the encroachments fo?lowing the HC directives. She gave a provocative speech forcing the land encroachers on stone pelting on the police party and demolition squad, sources said, adding eight officials including six cops were injured. Sources said, however, police continued action and removed encroachments from the area. To meet any eventuality more reinforcement was pressed onto service and the drive will continue through out the night, official sources said, adding that Government has taken all measures to get the land cleared of encroachments. Meanwhile, sources said that perturbed over the increasing land encroachments in Jammu and growing public resentment against the same, the Government has issued directives to the JDA authorities to identify the officials who facilitated encroachment of JDA land at a prime place. The Government has sought a detailed report from the JDA to disclose names of officials right from Patwari to VC JDA during whose period land was encroached so that punitive action is taken against them under law. Sources said increasing land encroachment has created a law and order situation and it can lead to violence in case the early steps were not taken to check the same. Bowing before H C directives Government was left with no alternative but to demolish the structures constructed by land grabbers on Government land. The land grabbing issue had become a big controversy as local people not only protested against the same but moved to HC to seek directives to the Government. |
