| ABVP activists call off hunger strike | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 11 : Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad, Jammu University (JU) today held a press conference at ABVP state office, Parade, Jammu where convener ABVP Jammu University Sanjay Singh today decided to call off the hunger strike against the fee hike in hostel of the varsity. The activists were on fast unto Death on the 4th Day today of the hunger strike and 59th day of their agitation against the hike in hostel fee. Jammu university authorities had enhanced the hostel fee by 85% which, ABVP activists described in violation of the Jammu University statutes but now recommendation Committee which was constituted to look into the matter has agreed the demands of students after going through the statues. The Recommendation Committee submitted their report to the Registrar Jammu University after several rounds of discussions with the ABVP activists. The committee recommended the reduction of security fee from Rs 2,000 to Rs. 800. Further according to fresh recommendations, the students now have to pay Rs 2980 per annum plus security fee in the academic session 2013-14 and for the next academic session they will have to pay Rs 3,480 plus security fees of Rs 800 which was earlier 5480 (+15% increase every year according to statutes). The recommendation committee also agreed upon that the university will not hike any fee in 2014-15. It was also recommended that a committee may be constituted to inquire into the allegations made by the students for discrepancies in the hostel fee charged from the boarders of different hostels. The committee has also recommended that the issue of chargesheets which was lodged against some students which ABVP consider was totally in the violation of principles of natural justice will be treated sympathetically. Registrar Prof. Manoj Dhar offered juice to the students on hunger strike in the presence of other committee members. |
