JAMMU, May 18: Chairman of the Damodhar Satri Udyog Sanstha (DSUS) Onkar Nath Chandra has announced setting up of Sheela Devi Memorial scholarships for school going girl child from the current academic year. Girls studying in class 1 to 12 would be eligible for earning the scholarship. The scholarships have been set up in the memory of Sheela Devi, co-chairperson of the Damodhar Satri Udyog Sanstha. Sheela Devi passed away after brief illness on April 28. Elaborating on the aims and objectives behind setting up meritorious scholarship for the bright child Chairman of the Sanstha said, Damodhar Satri Udyog Sanstha under Project PAHL is already engaged in the task of imparting education to street children and rag pickers. At present around 300 street children,majority of them hailing from Chattisgarh,Madhya Pradesh and other Naxal hit areas of Bihar and Orissa are enrolled for formal education in Project PAHL. Hema Jatwar, one of the senior students hailing from Chattisgarh recently passed her class 12 exam.She is one of the teachers engaged by the sanstha for imparting formal education to the street children. Hema Jatwar's elder sister also taught in the same school and helped PAHL team in starting the education centre. In his message Onkar Nath Chandra said the sanstha has decided to award scholarships to deserving children so that they can focus on their education without worrying for the cost involved. JAMMU, May 18: Sakshi Koul of MHAC Nagbani emerged as fastest athlete in under-17 category after she won the 100 meters gold on the opening day of the two-day inter-school girls' competitions of Jammu district, organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at BSF Stadium, here today. Second place in this track event went to Kulbinder Kour of Army Public School (APS) Miran Sahib while Palvi Manhas of Carmel Convent Kunjwani finished third. The under-14 sprint gold bagged by Sapna Sharma of MHAC Nagbani. Second place secured by Ikran Khan of KB Public while Janib Bibi, HS Maira Mandrian remained 3rd. Likewise in boys section, girls from MHAC Nagbani too made their present felt winning most of the medals in twin age groups of under-14 and under-17. JK Public School girls enter basketball semifinals

JAMMU, May 18: The JK Public School girls today reached the semifinals of both under-17 and under-14 categories in the inter-school district level competitions of Jammu being held under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at MA Stadium, here. In under-17 category, JK Public defeated Delhi Public School (DPS) 15-02. Earlier, in the prequarterfinals, DPS beat KC International School 14-10. Other Results: GD Goenka bt Carmel Convent 6-4; Jodhamal Public School bt Heritage 11-08; KC Gurukul bt MIER 10-00. Meanwhile, in under-14 age groups, semifinals line-up has been drawn with the entry of KC International, MIER, JK Public and Heritage in last four stages. The Results: KC International bt MHAC Nagbani 4-2; MIER bt KC Gurukul 9-0; JK Public bt Carmel Convent Kunjwani 8-0; Haritage got walkover against KC Public. As per the organising committee, the semifinals and final have been scheduled for tomorrow.

Natrang stages English play 'Great Expectations'

JAMMU, May 18: Natrang in its Sunday theatre series presented English play 'Great Expectations' which is based on the novel by Charles Dickens with the same name. The play was adapted and directed by Aarushi Thakur who is a post graduate in International Politics from University of Leicester, UK and a trained actor from Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London. The play was an artistic treat for the audience who liked the creative nuances. The play presented a very vivid picture of the early Victorian era and the progress of 'Pip' from childhood through often painful experiences to adulthood is presented before the audience. He encounters various people in this journey and few become a part of his life leaving a dramatic impact on him. He meets Havisham who is locked up with her unhappy past with a broken heart. He also meets the love of his life, Estella who never acknowledges that she is capable of love, thus escapes any commitment. In this journey Pip discovers his true self and his values. In the end Estella realizes and identifies her true self with Pip irrespective of her teachings that have always taught her to be arrogant and heartless. The play ends with a twist in the original story written by Dickens; Estella leaves her fiancée who is the wealthiest man in England to marry Pip. The artists who participated in the play included Susheel Raina as Pip, Gauri Thakur as Estella, Mahikshit Singh Langeh as Havisham, Namit Dubey as Bentley Drummel, Vanshika Gupta as Mrs. Joe, Namrata Chib as Biddy, Rajan Thakyal as Uncle Pumblechuk, Vrinda Bakshi as Mrs. Humble, Gopi Sharma as Young Pip, Sanchita Dubey as Young Estella and Shreya Gupta as Young Biddy.

Career Abacus Rehari awards prizes, certificates Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 18: Career Abacus, a leading Abacus Teaching Institute awarded certificates and prizes to its meritorious students in a function held at its Rehari Centre. Anil Gupta, President Jammu Kashmir Democratic Front was the chief guest. Preetika Jamwal, Principal Nav Yug Higher Secondary School and Iesha Jamwal, Principal Paramount Convent School were the guests of honour. The function started with the enchanting of Gayatri Mantra by the students of the Institute. Juicy Sharma, a passed out student of the Institute welcomed the chief Guest and other guests. The function started with dance by students of the Institute. On this occasion, a Painting Competition was also organized in which more than 150 students of different schools participated. Prizes were distributed among the winners of various categories. In between the function a demo of little kids was conducted by Divya which left the audience spell bound with the speed and accuracy of the kids. About 55 students of the Institute were awarded Certificates of completion of different Stages of their Abacus Program called "Career Abacus Champ". JAMMU/SRINAGAR, May 18: Considering the increasing number of students at Aryans Group of Colleges, Dena Bank recently installed its Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at Aryans Campus situated at Village Nepra-Thuha, Chandigarh-Patiala, near Chandigarh. M K Sharma, GM, Dena Bank today inaugurated the ATM at Aryans Campus. M K Bedi, ZM, Dena Bank was the Guest of Honour. Dr Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Group presided over the event. While addressing the gathering in the function held for Inaugural Ceremony of ATM, M K Sharma said that they have closely monitored the growth of Aryans in last 7 years. He added that Aryans Group has strongly expanded its base day by day in terms of students and faculty. Considering this only, the Bank has installed its ATM and is also planning to open its branch at Aryans Campus to fulfill the requirements of not only Aryans students & staff but also the people of nearby villages. M K Bedi speaking on the occasion said that earlier the nearby villagers had to go to either Banur or Rajpura for using ATM. This ATM on one hand will be useful for the 1500 Aryans family members; on the other hand it is also acting like a boon for the villagers of nearby more than 25 villages.

MIET celebrates World Telecommunication Day Early Times Report
Jammu, May 18: Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu in collaboration with the student chapter of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) today celebrated the "World Telecommunication and Information Society Day". The underlying theme for celebrating this day was "Broadband for Sustainable Development". Sundeep Talwar, Circle Head (operations), Aircel was the Chief Guest on this occasion. In his address, he highlighted the recent trends in telecom sector and projected Aircel as the leading service provider in J&K. He applauded the students in particular and the department in general for their commendable effort. The function started with a welcome address by Jamini Sharma, HoD ECE Department wherein he set a platform for the session based on the current theme. Prof. S.K Sharma, Principal MIET being a telecom expert provided a detailed overview of the evolution of the technology in this domain and highlighted the challenges which still need to be addressed. Pankaj Saini and Shivam Sawhney were adjudged first in the seminar presentation and given a cash prize of Rs. 1500, while Sahil Sharma and Sidhant Khajuria were the first runners up with a cash prize of Rs. 1000. |
