| Azad likely to be named Congress Chief Ministerial candidate | | Important meeting today | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, May 22: The Congress party is likely to name Ghulam Nabi Azad as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the forthcoming assembly polls scheduled to be held later this year. A meeting has been scheduled for Friday where some important decisions are likely to be taken. Insiders say the future relations with NC will also come up for discussion. Sources close to Ghulam Nabi Azad revealed to Early Times that as part of introspection following the recent defeat to NC-Congress alliance candidates across the state, an important meeting of State Congress office bearers without prior announcement is scheduled at Broadway Hotel here in Srinagar tomorrow. The demand for replacement of PCC chief may also be put forth. Many leaders favour takeover of the party by Azad. "Three Congress Ministers met Azad in Delhi and invited him to take reins of State Congress himself to end lobbyism, Ministers along with other senior workers in consultation with core group decided to project Azad as Chief Ministerial candidate also," sources said. Sources revealed that following the recent defeat to NC-Congress alliance candidates and later blame game among coalition partners particularly personal attacks on senior State Congress leaders like Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Ghulam Ahmad Mir and Ghulam Hassan Mir by NC leadership, top brass leadership informed Congress high command that there shall be no forcible decisions imposed on State Congress leadership without knowing the ground realities. "Senior Congress workers from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh divisions this time have already informed high command the reasons behind defeat and are adamant that there shall be no alliance with NC for forthcoming Assembly elections," sources said. Sources also said that Congress leadership has also decided to closely monitor that NC in general and Chief Minister in particular shall not be allowed to use Government machinery as a tool to gain public sympathy ahead of Assembly elections and swallow the share of State Congress which is a part of ongoing coalition Government. Pertinently after NC is busily engaged in introspection sessions these days in Kashmir, it will be for the first time after recently concluded Parliamentary elections that State Congress leadership has decided to review the pros and cons in a series of meetings likely to be held at all the three divisions of the state that led to the defeat of NC-Congress alliance candidates across the state in general and reasons behind the defeat to three Congress candidates who contested elections from Jammu and Ladakh divisions of the state. |
