Protesters demanding release of detained youth clash with Police

ANANTNAG, May 22: Protesters demanding release of a detained youth resorted to stone pelting in KP Chowk area of Anantnag town today and halted vehicular traffic for hours together forcing administration to reconsider the release of youth. Eyewitness told Early Times that this morning hundreds of men, women and youth came out in busiest KP Chowk of the town and started raising slogans against the police department. They were demanding the release of a local youth, who was arrested by the police a day earlier for his alleged involvement in a minor stone pelting incident in the area. According to locals, youth Identified as Aaqib Shabir Dar s/o Shabir Ahmad Dar, a class VIII student, resident of Gurpora Khanabal was arrested from his residence by the police last evening. They said that Aaqib is minor and has not committed any crime. However police sources said that Aaqib hurled stones on police on 21st of this month.
Protesters, who were demanding release of the youth clashed with police and hurled stones on them after they were cane charged by the police. Clashes continued for hours and vehicular traffic on the road remained affected, reports said. Later Additional Deputy commissioner Anantnag arrived on the spot and assured immediate release of the detained youth. Meanwhile SHO Anantnag, when contacted confirmed that they will release the youth. "His family members have just arrived in the police station and he will be released on bail as the offence he committed is bailable." SHO added.
