| `Congress supporting Article 370 at the cost of its existence in Jammu' | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 29: As if the defeat in Parliamentary elections was not enough to shake the Congress that the leaders are digging a grave for the party in Jammu region by supporting NC stand on Article 370. The people of Jammu, by and large, want revocation of Article 370. The Congress has assumed the role of the king maker because of its success in Jammu region in the last two assembly elections. It formed analliance with the PDP in 2002 and with the NC in 2008. In 2002 Assembly poll the Congress had bagged 20 seats and out of them 15 were from the Jammu region. In 2008 the Congress had won 17seats in the Assembly election and out of them it had bagged 14 from the Jammu region.Hence the region of Jammu,37 Assembly segments from the region and above all the electorate in Jammu are quite important for the survival of the Congress in the state. But senior leaders belonging to the state unit of the Congress thought it better to berate the BJP than to support the move for amending or repealing Article 370.The state Congress chief Prof SaifuddinSoz has said Article 370 is an integral part of the basic structure of the Constitution of India and it can't be either amended or abrogated unless people of JK want it. "Certain quarters who seek debate on Article 370 don't appreciate the fact that it is an integral part of the Constitution of India. It can neither be amended nor abrogated," Soz said in a statement here. The party vice president Abdul Gani Vakil too has supported Soz and said that the Congress was for strengthening the special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The Lok Sabha election has shown that majority of people in the Jammu region are opposed to the Congress. This is evident from the way the Congress lost both the Lok Sabha seats in the region of Jammu. The valley rejected the National Conference which had the support of the Congress. As such the Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir seems to be playing with fire but causing bigger erosion in its vote bank in the Jammu region by opposing any move to amend or revoke Article 370. |
