Jitendra Singh offers NC a hope out of hopelessness
Was it a ploy?

SRINAGAR, May 29: The timing of the Dr. Jitendra Singh's statement regarding abrogation of Article 370 is being questioned within the political circles in the state more than the statement itself as the newly appointed Minister made the controversial statement on the very first day he assumed office.
On one hand it may benefit the National Conference in the Valley, particularly in the backdrop of their electoral drubbing in the Parliamentary elections. On the other hand the issue gives the BJP high moral ground which will consolidate its vote-base in Jammu region.
"It has been observed that whenever the NC is in troubled waters, it tries to polarize the vote in the Valley. Even during the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, the son and father duo, Dr. Farooq and Omar constantly raised the issue of article 370, to strike an emotional card in the Valley. The fact that it did not yield any electoral benefits for the party, may have encouraged NC to look for an alternate strategy," a senior journalist wishing anonymity told Early Times.
"The sharp and quick reaction by the Chief Minister and handful NC workers protesting on the issue in Srinagar streets seems to gives relevance to the party which has otherwise been rejected by the electorate of Jammu and Kashmir" the journalist said. He said it also gives the NC leaders and workers a chance to hit headlines and remain part of the political discussions in the state.
Political observers wonder if this was the underlying reason why Jitendra Singh chose to highlight the issue during his first few hours in office. They observe that after the crushing defeat in the Parliamentary polls, Devinder Rana had lost his position in the close circles of the Chief Minister. Hence the whole episode, they opine, may be a ploy to regain his lost position in the party.
The haste with which the controversial issue has been raised has made many experts question if the whole episode was the well-thought out game-plan of the two brothers.
This argument that it may be a ploy holds more significance in the given circumstances when the opposition PDP was still celebrating its victory in the Lok Sabha elections. As if the National Conference leadership was informed before hand, the quick response from Omar and his lieutenants Nasir Aslam Wani and Devinder Rana left PDP in the lurch.
