| Jammu, Ladakh forces to be reckoned with | | Times have changed | | Rustam Jammu, July 1: Gone are the days when New Delhi under fake secular outfit and formations like the Congress used to focus their attention exclusively on Kashmir, announce financial and other packages to keep the separatists in good humour and enter into accords with Kashmiri leadership believing such a policy would end unrest in the Valley. They used to do so at the behest of the canny and communal Kashmiri leadership, which used to masquerade as mainstream. Gone are those days. Things have changed and changed very substantially after the Lok Sabha election. The people of Jammu province have rejected the fake secular outfits and returned to the Lok Sabha two members belonging to a party whose approach towards Jammu and Kashmir has always been different. The case in point is the BJP that stands for complete constitutional integration of the state into India and considers Jammu and Ladakh as important political factors in the state. During the past few days, the BJP has not only intensified its organizational activities across the state but also sent a number of proposals to the Union Government some of which deal with the entire state and some deal specifically with Jammu and Ladakh, which suffered discrimination during the past more than 66 years. It has virtually given up its age-old Jammu-centric approach and started behaving like a party that represents the entire state. Its mission 44+ has to be viewed in this context. The fact of the matter is that it has given an altogether new orientation to its whole approach towards Jammu and Kashmir. Similarly, the people of Ladakh have also rejected the fake secular outfits and returned to the Lok Sabha for the first time a member who also belongs to the BJP. He is influential and quite vocal and has already met with and submitted to PM Narendra Modi a comprehensive memorandum on Ladakhi demands, including the demand seeking UT status for the region. Besides, Jammu and Ladakh, which have now direct access to the Union Government, the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus too have been recognized as an important factor. In fact, the new Government at the centre has brought the issue of Kashmiri Hindus to the center-stage. It was for the first in 25 years that their issue figured in the Presidential address to the joint session of the Parliament. Not just this, the formation of new Government at the Centre has created a sense of hope among the refugees from West Pakistan, PoJK and border migrants of 1965 and 1971. The refugee issue is an important issue for the BJP, as they contributed a lot to the victory of its candidates in Jammu province. Another important that has changed the whole situation in the state is the decimation of the NC and the Congress. They have no say in the centre and they are not taken seriously in the state by the people. They have just become marginal outfits incapable of playing any role whatsoever. All in all, it appears that 2014 has created a novel situation in the sensitive border and difficult Jammu and Kashmir state. It augurs well for its future as well as future of the nation. |
