| Yes, NC cannot be silenced by muscle power | | | Early Times Report banihal, July 1: The Chief Minister today said that National Conference cannot be silenced by muscle power. He was addressing rallies in and around Banihal Tuesday. Omar Abdullah is right when he makes such a claim. According to a Srinagar based historian, National Conference used to have an army of goons who crushed dissent at crucial times especially in late 40s. "A party that has patronised goons for its political survival cannot be silenced through muscle power," he said. Recalling an incident, the historian says a journalist Ghulam Mohammad Kashfi was manhandled in full public view for not prefixing Quaid-e-azam to Sher-e-Kashmir's name. The journalist migrated to Pakistan. In 1947, the NC formed an army of goons, criminals and unscrupulous elements to tame the opposition . They were locally called Khuftan Fakir's. They would abduct women, resort to extortion and at times effect arrest of political activists. In 1975 when NC came back to power with Congress support, a new army of goons was formed to take care of the NC interests. Omar also talked about Naya Kashmir. The Naya Kashmir document was molested by Balraj Puri at the behest of Sher-e-Kashmir after the 1975 accord. In its present shape it is as good as, rather as bad as the NC election manifesto. |
