| Saradha scam: Role of some more politicians under CBI scanner | | | Agencies
New Delhi, July 1: Role of some more prominent political leaders from West Bengal in the Saradha scam are under the scanner of CBI which is now focusing on calculating losses incurred to investors.
CBI sources said the probe so far has indicated alleged collusion of powerful politicians to swindle hard earned money of thousands of poor people who had invested in the ponzi schemes like Saradha scam. The sources said role of a Bollywood actor, who was allegedly promoting the scheme, is also under the scanner and the agency may call him for examination in connection with the scam. They said his relations with promoters of Saradha group need to be clarified. They said as of now the agency has clubbed together hundreds of FIRs registered by West Bengal Police in three cases but more cases would be registered which may include some "big names" from the state political set-up. Refusing to share details of politicians and businessmen, the sources said, as of now focus is to ascertain losses incurred to thousands of investors whose savings for life were swindled through ponzi schemes.
CBI has taken over this case after Supreme Court directed the agency to probe multi-crore chit fund scams in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam in which various companies, including Saradha, are allegedly involved.
The agency has registered three FIRs in West Bengal whereas over 40 FIRs have been registered in Odisha. It has named suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh as one of the accused.
The court had passed the order on PILs seeking a stop to the entire chit funds business in the country and also a restraint on further collection of funds from investors as an immediate remedial step.
The petitioners had said they have no faith in the police authorities. They had alleged that the proceedings initiated by state governments appeared to be "biased and prejudiced" and sought a CBI probe into the multi-crore scams. |
