Overloading continues in Basohli without any check
7/6/2014 12:13:39 AM
Shiv Kumar Padha
Basholi, July 5: Over loading has become a daily practice of the passenger buses plying on the Basohli area roads. The buses jam-packed from inside and the passengers overhead run on these hilly, curvy and sharp turn roads fearlessly and unchecked flouting all the traffic and public safety rules brazenly. The negligence of the police and traffic police in checking the menace of overloading and ruthless driving on these roads have resulted in a number of fatal accidents with loss of precious lives in the past.
Maximum passenger buses and the mini buses which ply on the Kathua, Basohli and Bani roads have either lost their road worthiness or have completed their prescribed age. Due to the mi management, shortage of the buses and the increasing number of the daily commuters, the buses in general and the mini buses in particular carry the passengers beyond their capacity which results in over loading. Often the morning and the evening services on the interior routs are overloaded with passengers both from inside and on the roof. The roads in the area are hilly, narrow and have sharp and blind curves. The speeding buses, in order to pick up maximum passengers, drive fast and often loose control over the buses and result in the accidents. In the past many accidents have happened on these roads due to the skidding of the buses, rolling down in the deep gorges while negotiating the curve and turning turtle while applying sudden brakes in emergency. Many precious lives have been lost as a result of overloading by the buses on these roads in the past but neither the administration nor the local police have taken the cognizance of the crimes being committed by the drivers and the owners of such buses. The traffic police is seen in the area only once in a blue moon that too for collecting their ' Hafta '. Before any more lives are sacrificed on the altar of the over loading the local administration as well as the traffic/ police should come in action and curve the menace of overloading by penalizing the erring drivers. The police department, with the help of the RTO, should sort out and identify the buses which have lost their road worthiness are driven by using kerosene oil and send them to their final destination 'scrap houses'.
