| Abolishing two-flag system in J&K | | Age-old demand | | Rustam jammu, July 8: A very significant development took place in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the opening day of the Budget Session of the Parliament. Apart from a lively discussion of the price rise in which the ruling and opposition parties participated to express their concern over the issue, the Rajya Sabha was also urged by a member, Tarun Vijay, former editor of Organizer, to abolish the double-flag system in Jammu and Kashmir and facilitate the construction of a memorial in Srinagar for Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. “I demand that the Government should abolish the two-flag system in Jammu and Kashmir and there should be only one flag system. A memorial for Shyama Prasad Mookerjee should be established in Srinagar who died there fighting for the cause of the country,” he demanded through a “Special Mention”. Both the demands which were put forth by Tarun Vijay of the BJP deserve immediate appreciation. Jammu and Kashmir is one of 29 states of the Union, but it, unlike other states, has not only two-flag system but also has a separate constitution which doesn’t have a chapter on fundamental rights. The two-flag system and separate constitution for the solitary state have led many to believe that Jammu and Kashmir constitutes a republic within the Indian Republic. These two constitutional anomalies have also been exploited by Pakistan and other hostile nations, including China, to further their own geo-political interests in the state. The demand put forth by Tarun Vijay needs to be viewed in this context. Undoubtedly, it is time we abolished the two-flag system and scrapped the separate constitution that has failed to the people of the state in every respect so that Jammu and Kashmir is brought at par with other states of the Union and its people enjoy the fruits of Indian democracy. Similarly, it would be a befitting tribute if a memorial for Dr Shyama Prashad Mookerjee is constructed in Srinagar. It was he who on June 23, 1953 sacrificed his life for the cause of the country in Srinagar. It was he who deliberately violated the permit system at Lakhanpur to inspire, motivate and induce others to do the same so that the people of the state could visit any part of India at will and the vice versa without obtaining permit from the designated authorities. Jammu and Kashmir would not have been within India and the minorities in the state would have been crushed and eliminated like it happened in Pakistan, had Shyama Prasad Mookerjee not sacrificed his life in the state. One can only hope that the authorities in New Delhi would consider these two demands of Tarun Vijay and do the needful at the earliest to send a clear message to the hostile countries and hostile elements that they mean business. Not only this, they should also abolish Article 370 that has harmed the minorities and created a wall of hatred between the state and New Delhi. For how long will we treat Jammu and Kashmir differently? Enough is enough. |
