| Curtains ring down, doors shut on Chaman Lal Gupta? | | BIZZARE: BJP’s suspension, revocation drama | | Kunal Shrivatsa jammu, July 8: With the re-induction of suspended Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MLA Jagdish Raj Sapolia into the party fold, the BJP has again established its strange demeanor in dealing with ‘indiscipline’ and ‘deceit. The queer ways of the BJP could be gauged from the fact that while it wasted no time in suspending seven party MLAs from the primary membership of the party for six years without having bothered to cross check the facts and getting any valid proof or evidence against them, even more bizarre was the revocation of suspension of five legislators including MLA Domana Bharat Bhushan, MLA RS Pura Prof Gharu Ram, MLA Reasi Baldev Sharma, MLA Hiranagar Durga Dass and MLA Bani Master Lal Chand in January last. The party had handed the exit order to the group of seven legislators including MLA Basohli Jagdish Sapolia for allegedly indulging in cross voting in the Legislative Council elections in 2011. The decision of the party in January was odd in many ways as it only granted amnesty to five of them while not showing any mercy to veteran leader MLA Jammu West Prof Chaman Lal Gupta and Jagdish Raj Sapolia though all of them were penalized for the same offence. The duo was left out as if only they have committed the ‘sin’ of cross voting while their other colleagues were punished mistakenly. Now, when Sapolia’s suspension is revoked, BJP has again faltered in handling the entire issue since it once more adopted ‘pick and choose’ policy in dealing with the fate of two of its remaining suspended MLAs. For the second time in six months, the BJP High Command has overlooked the revocation of suspension of the ‘once a party heavyweight’ Prof Chaman Lal Gupta. It appears that the party High Command has decided to permanently shut the doors on Prof Gupta, who seems to be a victim of party factionalism as it is an open secret that BJP was a divided house before the cross-voting allegation rocked the party. It may be recalled that while Prof Chaman Lal Gupta was suspended from the party in May 2011, the other six MLA were shown the door in October 2011 for their role in the ‘infamous’ cross-voting episode. |
