Srinagar, July17: Police fired teargas shells to disperse some people who were fighting over the sharing of water of a stream in south Kashmir's Shopian district. At least 15 people got critically injured in the clash.
People used sharp edged weapons and sticks against each other and police had to use tear smoke shells to disperse them. The fighting occurred due to a dispute of water in Zainapora area of Shopian district in South Kashmir. According to reports, 15 people were injured in the clash and all of them had been hospitalized.
Reban and Khojepora villages are divided by a stream whose water is used by both for agricultural purposes.
Sources said since there was very little water in the stream nowadays, the people of both the villages wanted to have more of it for their fields. This led to a scuffle today which later took the shape of an armed clash. Police had to intervene and fire teargas shells to disperse them.
There was free use of lathies and sharp-edged weapons in the fight, leading to injuries to 15 odd people who were hospitalised. One with critical injuries was admitted to district hospital, Anantnag. He has been identified as Sabzar Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Hassan Dar, a resident of Reban.
DSP headquarter Shopian Zahoor Ahmad said that a police party was on the spot to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, local sources said that as the police party reached the spot the clashing groups started pelting stones on the police party. They said Police fired many tear smoke shells to disperse the mob.
At least four police men were also injured by the stone pelting after which CRPF was called in.
