| Legality of 240 MW Uri-II Hydro Electric Project! | | Union Power Ministry belies Taj's claims | | Akshay Azad Jammu, Aug 4: The Union Power Ministry has belied the claims made by Minister for Health and Medical Education Taj-Mohi-ud-Din, over the legality of Uri-II Hydro Electric Project, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir in first week of July. The Health and Medical Education Minister Taj-Mohi-ud-Din had raked up a controversy by claiming that the 240 MW Uri-II Hydro Electric Project, which had been inaugurated in first week of July, had no license to operate but Union Ministry has totally contradicted the claims. According to recent statement of Union Power Ministry, it has been maintained that 240 MW, Uri Hydro Electric Project-II is one of the seven projects entrusted to National Hydel Power Corporation (NHPC) for execution in Central sector in pursuance of an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on July 20, 2000 between J&K State Government and Union Government. The Union Power Ministry has further stated, "NHPC has executed Uri-I and Uri-II Projects, after obtaining all statutory clearances from concerned authorities". When the Project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Taj Mohi-ud-Din had reportedly claimed that NHPC hadn't obtained licence from State Government to run the project. Even, Health and Medical Education Minister had also stated that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was slated to inaugurate the Uri-II project in June, 2013 but the proposal was deferred after he had taken the matter with Centre. But as per Union Power Ministry, the objections raised by MLA Uri Taj Mohi-ud-Din, regarding Uri hydroelectric project II running without requisite permission from J&K Government was not based on facts. The Union Power Ministry has also maintained that for Uri-I power project, the land required for power station as per records was 249.5 Hectares and compensation paid for acquisition was Rs. 10.44 Crores. Moreover, for the land acquired for the Uri-II power station as per records is 177.75 hactares and compensation amount was Rs. 49.44 Crores. |
