PDP smells victory, says 44 plus achievable

srinagar, Aug 4: As the Assembly elections are coming closer political activities in Jammu and Kashmir are gaining momentum. The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which won all the three seats from Kashmir in the recently held Parliamentary polls has smelled victory as it has announced maximum number of the candidates for the Assembly polls, slated to be held later this year.
A top PDP leader said that party is confident about overthrowing the present National Conference led dispensation. "We have made inroads in the areas which were considered to be the strongholds of the National Conference. The PDP will emerge as the single largest party," he claimed.
He said that PDP's success in the Parliamentary elections has unnerved both National Conference and the Congress. "NC had tried its best to enter into a pre-poll alliance with Congress but its proposal was turned down by the Congress party."
The leader claimed that Congress has realized that NC would "lose its address" in the forthcoming Assembly elections. "Congress has parted ways to keep its options open. For them also forthcoming polls won't be a cake walk both the parties are sailing in the same boat," he added.
The PDP spokesman Naeem Akthar while talking to Early Times said, "PDP played a role of vibrant opposition during the past six years. We exposed the corrupt practices and the inefficiency of the Omar led Government and ensured that we highlight all the misdeeds of the present dispensation."
Akthar claimed that PDP has become a grass root party and has emerged as a strong alternative for the common people. "Masses have realized that NC rule has always brought miseries for them and the decisive mandate given by them in the recent Parliamentary elections has clearly indicated that they have voted for a change," he added.
On being told that some people are of the opinion that PDP won due to low voter turnout in the Parliamentary elections and if the percentage increases there is every possibility of NC bouncing back, Akthar said, " History stands testimony to the fact that boycott has always helped NC's cause. If poll percentage will increase our chances of touching 44 plus seats will become brighter."
Asked if PDP has to forge a post-poll alliance with any party to form the Government whom would the PDP opt for, BJP or Congress, Akthar said, " Our aim is to touch more than 44 seats so that we don't have to enter into a coalition with any other party. Era of coalitions is over. You need to remember that in the Parliamentary polls we got clear mandate on 41 seats."
