| High profile empowered committee meet postponed | | Appointment of SHRC chairman, members | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Aug 11: The meeting of the four-member empowered committee headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to appoint the Chairman and members of the J&K Human Rights Commission was postponed today till further orders. The meeting of the empowered panel to decide about the appointments was scheduled to meet today in Srinagar. Besides, Chief Minister, the empowered committee comprises Mubarak Gul, Chairman Legislative Council, AmritMalhotra and Leader of Opposition in assembly which has fallen vacant after Mahbooba Mufti's was elected to Lok Sabha from Anantnag-Pulwama Parliamentary constituency. However, the meeting was postponed till further orders with senior officers of Law Department and GAD citing busy schedule of Chief Minister as one of the reasons. But insiders maintained that the meeting was postponed because the Chairman Legislative Council, Amrit Malhotra was not available in Srinagar. Sources attribute the conspicuous absence of Malhotra to National Conference's decision to boycott the meetings of the Coordination Committee of the coalition government headed by PCC president SaifuddinSoz in protest against the latter's remarks of governance deficit in J&K. Sources said that Malhotra skipped the meeting only because the NC had earlier decided not to attend the meetings of the Coordination Committee headed by Soz. Sources said the bickering between NC and Congress over the "governance deficit" is the main reason. Sources said that the State Human Rights which is practically defunct since 2012 for being headless and member-less will continue to remain till the elections to the state legislature are held. Meanwhile, one of the senior functionaries of the General Administration Department said that the appointment of chairman and , members would be made before the beginning of autumn session starting August 25. It is pertinent to mention here that State Accountability Commission, State Human Rights Commission, State Board of School Education and many other institutions and autonomous bodies in the state are still headless due to which these important institutions have almost become non-functional. Human Rights Commission has a Chairperson and four Members. At present there are three vacancies of Members in the Commission and besides the chairman. |
