| With NC, Congress on razor's edge, speculations rife that Omar may resign | | No end to blame game between coalition partners | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Aug 11: As the relations between National Conference and Congress, coalition partners in the present coalition dispensation have hit the lowest ebb, speculations and rumours made rounds in the summer capital today that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah may put in his papers. Sources told Early Times that a section of the Congress legislators and leaders want the party high command to withdraw support to National Conference. This group of Congressmen is not happy with the overall attitude of National Conference towards them more so after a recent controversy. Some of the National Conference leaders have recently and in the past as well said that Congress party made the governance tough for them. These people said that pro-people initiatives could not be taken in the state since Congressmen raised objections and created obstacles in this whole process. "The recent statement in this context has not gone well with the local Congress leadership and they want the party to pull out from the government. Once that happens the government headed by Omar would fall automatically and fresh assembly elections have to be conducted some months before the scheduled holding of elections," said sources. Sources said that on the other hand Omar wants to play to the galleries by resigning from his post rather than waiting for the withdrawal of the support by Congress legislators. He would rather call on Governor Narendra Nath Vohra and convey him his decision to quit rather than waiting for the other side to bell the cat. Given the present scenario it seems to be very difficult for the coalition government to carry on with its business. It is quite possible that the government may go anytime with both National Conference and Congress trying to expose each other over the 'fallacies'. But this won't be too easy for leaders of both parties especially the chief minister. "These days Omar Abdullah is busy with carrying out the damage control exercise. Some steps have already been taken with the others round the corner as well. Omar wants to make the newly formed administrative units functional and for that he needs some time. Resignation at this point of time would hamper this and party may lose out as and when the fresh elections for state assembly are held," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that Congress leaders and workers have been accusing National Conference of not giving them fair treatment in the working of present coalition dispensation. At times these people said that Congress is the 'B' team in the coalition government. "In the past All India Congress Committee Vice-President, Rahul Gandhi would chip in and get the differences between Congress and National Conference sorted out. Since Rahul's position is very bad this time around one cannot expect him to act as a mediator between his party legislators and those belonging to National Conference," said sources. Sources said that it is quite possible that the directions from Congress high command especially those of Rahul and his mother Sonia Gandhi would not go well with the local unit of party. This is due to the fact that the party faced huge drubbing at the hands of Bharatiya Janta Party at the national level. |
