Flash floods in Rajouri claim 70 lives

RAJOURI, Sept 8: The recent flash floods followed by landslides in the entire Rajouri district have claimed 70 lives till today "44 bodies have been recovered till today from various locations including 4 from near village Khour (Akhnoor) about 70 kilometers from the bus mishap spot. According to information collected from the relatives about 67 persons were part of Barat of one Sukhbinder Singh of Rajpura Bhata and were travelling in the bus which was swept away in the flash floods" said Pardeep Kumar, SDPO, Nowsherta. Pertinent to mention the seasonal rivulet which swept away the bus on September 4 first enters POK near Menka Mahadev in Sunderbani tehsil and after taking a round of about 3 kilometers in POK it again enters India and submerged in Chenab river at Akhnoor.
Officials sources said that 4 more persons died in Rajouri on Sunday and Monday in the flash floods and land sliding who were identified as Tipper driver Mohd Bashir of Poonch, Kanheyia Lal (working with BSNL contractor) of Khushi Nagar, Uttar Pardesh, Mohd Aslam of Hayatpura (Manjakot) and Doda Khan of Moghla who was injured in land sliding and died on Monday. Deputy Commissioner Jatinder Singh, said that immediate help of Rs 1.5 lakh have been provided to the kith and kin of the deceased and more finacial aid is expected from various sources in the near future.
He added that approximate loss to property including PHE, agricultural, flood control schemes, school buildings, roads etc is about Rs 132 crores out of which Rs 60 crores have been demanded as immediate help from Financial Commissioner (revenue) for temporary restoration of essential schemes.
As immediate help the state government has sent 10 big tents (about 60-70 persons can be accommodated) and some blankets to Rajouri which will be distributed among the affected people.
Deputy Commissioner said that the district has sufficient stock of government ration and as more rains have been predicted district administration has demanded more ration to feed about 25000 souls.
He further said that CMO is in constant touch with the Director Health services and more life saving drugs and necessary medicines have been send to Rajouri
Dr Jatinder Singh , Deputy Commissioner further added that district administration will also seek rehabilitation for those alone survivals of the families who have been washed away in the bus in flash floods near Nowshera and some of them are still missing. Deputy Commissioner also organized the meetings of district officers including tehsildars, SDMs etc to take stock of the situation under their areas of jurisdiction and for necessary immediate financial and other helps.
