| 36 Jammu villages without drinking water, PHE silent | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 8: More than 36 villages which are located ahead of the fourth bridge and in the low lying areas of river Tawi do not have a drop of water to drink. Early Times reporter who visited these villages was told by the locals that they neither have a drop of water to drink nor are the officials of PHE department making any serious effort to provide them some kind of temporary assistance. They said that even the tanker service is yet to be provided to them. They further said that the officials of the PHE as well as Flood Control Department are yet to visit their villages to find out about the availability of water. "Pipes have got washed away. The entire water supply network is in disarray. Department is yet to take cognizance of the problems being faced by us. We are being forced to fetch fresh water from distant places for drinking," said a local Shambhu Nath. He added that rain stopped more than 48 hours ago but the PHE as well as Flood Control staff posted in our area is yet to show up. "They are habitual of playing with the lives of the people. They are likely to visit our villages after some top officialed directs them. Even then, they would take more than a month to restore water supply in some villages and not in all the 36 villages which are located barely 10 kilometres from newly constructed fourth bridge on river Tawi," added Isher Dass. On being asked, an official of PHE said, "We are aware of the water woes of the people living in the low lying areas of Jammu. These 36 villages have suffered the most in the flash floods. Our pipelines have got washed away. It would take some more time to provide water to all these villages. Till them, since Early Times has brought it to our notice, we would explore possibility of providing them drinking water supply by some alternative mechanism." |
