Reservation policy- a bane for deserving youth
9/24/2014 10:48:11 PM

Mudasir Tariq

SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Although the reservation criteria for OBC, RBA, SC, ST and others was introduced in the system to reduce the economic gap between different sections of the society, but it's misuse is turning out to be the biggest element of discrimination. People misuse these categories even after gaining all the benefits.
"The constitutional framers put the clause of reservation as at that time there were caste and area wise discrimination system in place. Going by the present scenario regarding reservation policy one comes to know about the ugly truth behind reservation game. This clause needs necessary amendments as people continue to get benefits even when they have gained higher status," said Mohsin Naqaash, an advocate.
Attracted by the lure of getting good job opportunities and seats in educational institutions, many people make use of these reserved categories even after living in non-reserved areas. While as there have been a number of cases where people have purchased land in reserved areas to seek categories.
"I don't understand the limit of cheapness. People who have shifted from backward areas to city after gaining riches by all these categories and are living in posh areas of city owning huge mansions, still have these RBA certificates and fully bearing its fruits and there is nobody to investigate them, this is shere injustice," said Dr. Suhail Farooq.
Surprisingly there is not any clear criterion for declaring a place `backward' or `forward' and while observing the ground situation, there are various areas in valley where people have better facilities of life but are still backward. At the same time there are other places where people have been deprived from basic amenities but are bearing the burden of forwardness.
"There are areas which are nearer to city or district headquarters that have acquired the privilege of being backward. Whereas there are some remote areas where people dream about these basic necessities of life and have been deprived completely. Authorities need to checkout all this because this is the reason of immense injustice," said Basharat Ahmad, a student.
Meanwhile lured by the category criteria, in the recent past a strange phenomenon is in place under which people tend to marry their children in the backward areas in order to seek benefits, which is said to be having ill effects.
"There is competition in every sector of life. People now prefer to marry their children usually daughters in the backward areas where they can get a job easily after gaining category certificate. This trend is on rise nowadays and this is an alarming issue right now and it is going to be a burden for the generations to come," said Mohammad Taha, an educationist. Surprisingly in every field, government services, academics there is almost 50% reservation for SC, ST and OBC, putting the rest of the people in water tight compartment situation and this competition is increasing with every passing hour.
