Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 24: Around 5, 77,595 patients were examined, during flash-flood by peripheral hospitals of Kashmir Region.
According to official communiqué, a total of 5, 77,595 patients were examined under daily OPD's in peripheral hospitals of Kashmir Province from September 4 till date.
Around 35,000 patients were admitted and 1435 major surgeries were conducted during the said time across the valley. Moreover 2297 normal deliveries and 1260 caesarean section were performed. It is pertinent to mention here that the performance indicators have reasonably increased if compared to the work done of last year for the same time period especially the caesarean sections which have doubled for the same time keeping in view the fact that valley's main maternity hospital along with majority of tertiary care hospitals were submerged.
All the health institutions were working except a few which after few days restored their work. Apart from rendering health services from health institutions the department till now has dispatched various mobile medical camps in flood affected areas across Kashmir Province with an effort to provide basic health services, awareness and vaccination. Various district and sub-district hospitals were supplemented with additional staff including 59 specialist doctors deputed by Govt. of India and medical supplies which in most instances had to be air dropped in the beginning with the support from army. The department has initiated a drive to administer anti-measles vaccines, OPV and Vitamin A to the target population of the flood affected area both from camps and health institutions of flood affected areas. In addition to this the department is using various IEC tools to reach out the masses in the form of advisories, pamphlets, milking and interpersonal communication.
The department has established a Crisis Management Centre at Barzulla with specific emphasis on collection of surveillance data on daily basis from all the districts of Kashmir Province and analyzing the same data for early detection and control of impending outbreaks/epidemics. The department has created Rapid Response teams to investigate reports of any suspected outbreaks and action to be followed thereof.
Department of Health & Family Welfare appreciates the role of its staff, allied departments, NGO's from J&K and outside state, and especially volunteers and youth who have been working with zeal to reach out to the flood affected areas for contributing in rendering health services.
