| Rumor mill ran fast in flood ravaged Kashmir | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 26: Like flood waters, the rumor mill was also running very fast during the last fortnight in Kashmir. Dr Sethi's funeral in Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK), noted pediatrician Dr Qaiser's death due to drowning were some of the rumors doing rounds in the water logged Valley. People even went to the extent of saying that Pakistan television showed Dr Sethi's identity card and his burial. The rumor mongers, however, fell silent when asked Dr Sethi could not be buried for obvious reasons. Another rumor that generated lot of interest in flood hit civil lines was the story of two children abandoned by their parents in a Sintex tank. The children were then found by somebody in downtown in typical Bollywood Masala Movie style. "A baby born to a Sikh woman in Barzulla Gurdwara was named Sailaab Singh," was a hot rumor on a hazy morning. A rumor that drove a senior scribe almost mad was about death of 50 persons that had taken refuge in a house at Jawahar Nagar. According to the rumor, the house collapsed killing all the inmates. Yet another rumor triggered anti-Modi sentiments in a Batmaloo locality. "Modi directed the Army to open the gates of Kishan Ganga dam causing flood in entire Valley. They were pacified by telling them the exact location of Kishan Ganga. They laughed and cursed the rumor mongers. "Somebody had seen a monster somewhere and Army was distributing expired foods." As if this was not enough that another rumor was spread to scare the hapless people. "Kashmir is going to experience a massive earthquake of 9.5 magnitude in the coming days." Well who can predict earthquakes? |
