| After failing to fight floods, administration fails to utilize relief | | 2500 metric tons of rice sent by Chhattisgarh Govt abandoned at Udhampur Railway Station | | Sarita Jamwal
Udhampur Sept 26:Public fury against complete administrative paralysis when devastating floods hit the state still at its climax, the anguish amongst flood victims is now growing over the failure of the state administration to distribute the relief material arriving from across the country amongst them.
Urgency of relief measures of Udhampur district administration could be gauged from the fact that 2500 metric tonnes rice sent by Chhattisgarh government in 42 boggies for the flood victims is lying unattended for the last six days at the Udhampur railway station while thousands of needy survivours are desperately in need of food grains.
Victims have rued apathy of the district administration in early disbursal of the relief. They have also accused the administration of ignoring flood victims in hilly areas where people are not having any ration or other relief material .
Raghav Sharma of Indian Democratic Human Rights Organization, an NGO demanded that relief being sent for flood victims be immediately distributed among needy who are badly suffering for want of it. He added that state government has announced six month free ration for flood affected people but till date nothing has been given to them.
Leaders of different political outfits have also shown deep concern over apathy of the administration which failed to shift relief material at proper place . MLA Udhampur Balwant singh Mankotia has demanded immediate relief for the people affected by the recent flash floods and landslides in the district. He alleged that administration has failed to act on time to provide relief to the affected people, particularly in hilly areas. Assistant Director Consumer affairs and public distribution (CAPD) Udhampur when contacted said, "we have received 2500 metric tonnes rice from Chhattisgarh government for flood affected people but due to unavailability of proper storage, we are facing difficulty" . "Yesterday when we were shifting rice to safer place, it suddenly started raining and we had to leave the work in between" he added. |
