| Historic opportunity for people of Jammu province | | Crucial assembly polls | | Rustam
Jammu, Nov 1: The upcoming assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir are very crucial for the state in general and Jammu province in particular. In fact, these elections provide a historic opportunity for them to elect a Government of their own choice. They are intelligent enough to elect their representatives. There should be no doubt about it that they would make a right choice and elect a Government that treats all the three regions of the state equally and delivers.
These elections are all the more significant for the people of Jammu province whose complaint all along had been that they were not given their due share in the state's political processes and all those who ruled the state after October 1947 treated them shabbily and gave a preferential treatment to Kashmir at all levels. It was also their complaint that no one from Jammu province was ever considered fit for leading the state Government or holding the highest executive office in the state. Their whole refrain had been that they only got crumbs, despite the fact that they contributed more revenue to the state exchequer.
Their complaints cannot be ignored because these are genuine and well-founded. Political parties which are in the fray have recognized the ground realities as they exist in Jammu province. That is the reason the leadership of these parties is trying to convince the people that their party, if voted to power, would accord equal importance to all the three regions and follow the principle of justice and equity. It appears there would be a cut-throat competition among the major political players in the coming days to woo the Jammu electorate. In other words, all these political players would put attractive wares in the Jammu's political market for sale so that they emerge victorious and form the next Government in the state. It would be for the people of Jammu province to weigh all the options taking into consideration the track record of the parties which remained in power and which all through occupied the opposition benches. It would not be difficult for them to exercise the right choice.
Those who view the present political scenario like in the past and make predictions would prove wrong. The stereo-type approach will not help them make calculations. For, the electoral dynamics in Jammu province, like other parts of the country, including Kashmir and Ladakh, have changed and the most important factor that has started playing a crucial role in the electoral exercises is the huge participation of the youth, who constitute more than 60 per cent of the electorate. The approach of the youth is modern and not traditional and this was reflected in the state also during the Lok Sabha elections which proved a waterloo for the ruling NC and the Congress and resulted in the emergence of the PDP and the BJP as two major political forces, with the PDP creating a history in the Valley and the BJP in Jammu and Ladakh.
The poll managers of the various political parties would commit a serious mistake if they refuse to accept this ground reality. Indeed, there are people in Jammu province who have come to believe that "the electorate of Jammu province this time would spring a big surprise by rejecting those who ditched this beautiful province to please their masters in Kashmir for promoting their own vested interests". |
