Many iconic figures desert party to join enemy camps | Cong dips neck deep into troubled waters | | Kunal Shrivatsa Jammu, Nov 1: It seems that there is no end to troubles for the state unit of Congress presently as the exodus of its leaders from the organization one after another has become a routine affair ever since it received a crushing defeat in Lok Sabha polls in J&K as well as other parts of the country. In a fresh jolt to the party, a young leader and State Secretary Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) R S Pathania, who has a strong footing in Ramnagar Assembly Constituency, today joined Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). With top, middle and lower rung leaders prefer to say good bye to the grand old party of the country, it looks like that the top brass of the Congress has no ways and means to stop the mass departure of party rank and file. The trend of leaving Congress by its leaders first started with the resignation of ex-Minister and two times Member of Parliament Choudhary Lal Singh in the month of July. After quitting the Congress, senior party leader Lal Singh joined the BJP on August 25 last at Kathua in the presence of BJP national president Amit Shah. While another Congress stalwart and former Deputy Chief Minister of the state Mangat Ram Sharma along with his son Subhash Sharma quit the party on October 26 last to join People's Democratic Party (PDP). In between, couple of prominent leaders including Organization Secretary of the party, Vinod Mahajan also left Congress before joining PDP on October 13 while chairman Media Cell and chief spokesperson Farooq Renzushah, a known figure from Kashmir, quit the party on October 25 last. If these famous names severed ties with the party which they nurtured from time to time, a host of unknown faces also thought it better to leave the Congress in search of other viable alternatives. R S Pathania, who contested last Assembly polls in 2008 as an independent from Ramnagar and bagged around 10,000 votes, is the latest to join the bandwagon of those leaders who think that either the Congress is a sinking ship or they have nothing more to offer to the party. It is pertinent to mention here that R S Pathania's family remained associated with Congress for the last so many years and his father B S Pathania also served as Udhampur District President of the party. The 'junior' Pathania's parting ways with the Congress means that it would have its bearing in the coming elections in the entire Udhampur district particularly Ramnagar Assembly segment where the grand old party will now have to search for new options as far as contesting the polls is concerned. |
