After Kashmir, stone-pelters become active in Rajouri too | | | Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Nov 1: After Kashmir, stone-pelters have become active in old Rajouri too. In the past one week, three incidents of stone-pelting have been witnessed there. A few days ago, stones were pelted by miscreants on two consecutive days in which glass panes of a medical shop were broken and some people had a narrow escape at busy City Chowk. Senior police officers including Rajouri SSP, visited the area and met the shopkeepers, asking them not to get panicky. They assured that the miscreants would soon be behind the bars. On Friday, at about 8.30 pm, miscreants despite police surveillance again struck and pelted a glass bottle on the same spot in which two policemen on duty and a shopkeeper had a narrow escape. The bottle hit the wall and glass pieces spread all over. Police and its intelligence wing are, however, clueless to the identity of miscreants who keep roaming freely in old city and its adjoining areas. As Rajouri city is communally sensitive and any such incident in future may flare up the tension, additional SP convened a meeting of shopkeepers and prominent citizens of Rajouri city today and sought their help and suggestions. Several suggestions were extended by the prominent citizens and it was decided that as stone pelting was a serious matter and may lead to more tension, youth from both the communities, few activists of Civil Defence and police personnel in plain clothes will take rounds of the locality to identify the miscreants. It was also suggested by the shopkeepers and prominent citizens that there should be no power curtailment in the old city between 5 pm and 10 pm as the miscreants struck only when the power was off, it becomes easy for them to escape. The officers hoped that with the support of locals, the miscreants would be caught. Some prominent citizens apprehended that some anti-national and anti-social forces, who were not in favour of peaceful assembly elections, might have hired the miscreants to disturb the communal harmony and peace in Rajouri district and such elements must be identified as soon as possible. Dr Hasseb Mughal, SSP, has appealed to the people of Rajouri city to keep vigilance around their houses, shops and be the eyes and ears of law enforcing agencies to book the miscreants and maintaining peace and tranquillity. |
