Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 1: Even the exterior of the railway's East Colony, housing 60 odd quarters on the right of the reservation counter at railway station here, do not maintain their look. The interiors lie in shambles. Thanks to the poor upkeep and poor administration of railway authorities.
Constructed over 35 years back for 4th class employees, the quarters are in dire need of repairs. It is advisable to avoid going inside and click photos from the outside only as these are in a state of ruin as a result of age and neglect.
The appearance of the quarters can really have anyone second-guessing whether to go inside or not. The ceilings of most of the quarters have developed cracks all over. The inner walls are also in a very bad condition.
The outer walls resemble the look of a deserted building as these have grass, plants and algae all over them.
The occupants face the biggest problems during rains when water leaks from roofs and walls, making it risky for them to live there. "During rainy days, we prefer to shift to safer places to save our lives. The rain drops continue to ooz from the ceiling even after the rains stop," said a railway employee on the condition of anonymity.
"The quarters definitely need renovations and we have many times spent from our pockets on minor repairs," he added.
He said they had several times approached the higher authorities and apprised them of the danger they faced to their lives due to the dilapidated condition of quarters but they were returned every time with fake assurances.
When contacted, a senior railway officer said a proposal for the repair of quarters had been forwarded by the Jammu railway authorities to the higher authorities but the funds had not been released so far. "Till the requisite funds are made available to us, we cannot take up the repair work on our own," he added.
An office bearer of Northern Railwaymen's Union too felt concerned about the bad condition of quarters. He regretted that though they had also taken up the matter with railway's Ferozpur Division but it too had done nothing in this regard.
He warned to hold anti-railway protests in near future if an immediate decision was not taken for the repair of quarters. He also demanded immediate released of the requisite funds.
