Udhampur, Jan 13 : An entire generation in Udhampur is threatened by the easy availability of Poppy straw as tea stalls along the highway are openly and fearlessly selling the contraband and Police are maintain a mysterious silence.
The circulation of Poppy straw (Bukki) has been increasing at an alarming rate in the last two years and is harming the social order of the district . Poppy Straw (Bukki) ,Charas, Gutkha , are increasingly becoming the drugs of choice among youth here as these are easily available at local tea stalls . It is pertinent to mention that a large consignments of drug particularly Charas and Poppy straw are being brought here by peddlers from valley and adjoining Doda district .
According to information the district Police has recently seized a large amount of Poppy Straw , and Charas, during checking on Jammu Srinagar highway from Patnitop to Tikri and has detained drug peddlers hailing from valley , Doda and Punjab in connection with drug business but drugs worth several lakhs are still getting into the district daily from valley and Doda district and valley and police are yet to evolve a comprehensive strategy for combating the growing drug menace in the district despite being informed number of times by citizens and NGOs during police public meets .
Social workers Anil Paba and Parvesh Parihar express great concern that youth belonging to lower age groups are being initiated into drug abuse in city . They allege that police failed to check the menace as popular drug Poppy straw being used by majority of youths here is easily available on tea stalls and can be bought for twenty to fifty rupees . They have demanded special patrolling by police to check menace within city and to save youths from the growing .
On the condition of anonymity, a local resident of Shiv Nagar and a drug addict disclosed that there are some main peddlers who brought contraband from Valley and further sublet it in local market . He alleged that Bukki was easily available at Bus stand , Shiv Nagar and Salain Talab , Birma bridge areas at local tea stalls .
He disclosed that some of the police personals are also in its grip and can beseen using it on tea stalls with other drug addicts. |
