Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 13 : Outraged at the demand of a few Congress members that Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief Prof Saiufddin Soz needs to own the responsibility for Congress facing defeat in the recent assembly polls and resign many Congress activists and leaders from Kashmir region today said if Prof Soz is compelled to tender his resignation it would lead to split in the state Congress.
Terming Prof Soz as "born leader" Congress leaders while talking to Early Times said that Soz has led the Congress from the front during all these years and Kashmir and Ladakh have recognized his contribution as the JKPCC Chief. "Congress won four seats in Kashmir and lost four seats, including Dooru, Gurez, Beerwah and Uri with narrow margins. Over all we came second on 37 seats across Jammu and Kashmir," said a Congress leader.
He said that due to the efforts of Prof Soz, Congress has been able to build its base across Kashmir and has become a force to reckon with.
"We have a vote bank in Rafiabad, Kokernag, Tral, Baramulla, Pampore Sonawari and other areas. Besides that we won four seats in Ladakh region and lost Zanskar with a narrow margin. What more could have one expected from Prof Soz who during all these years has worked relentlessly to make Congress a vibrant force in JK," he added.
Another Congress activist said that despite Congress witnessing an anti-wave throughout India party managed to secure 12 seats out of which eight were secured in Ladakh and Kashmir regions in the recent JK assembly elections. "People who are demanding Soz sahib's resignation today can ask Soniaji and Rahulji to quit as Congress lost the parliamentary elections. Prof Soz is not the only Congress president who lost the elections, party has witnessed defeats in many states in the recent past but none of the chiefs have resigned," he added. Another Congress leader threatened that if Soz is compelled to step down it can lead to the division in Congress and it would prove suicidal for the party.
