Almost 25 families were shifted amid intense cross-border firing in Uri sector

BARAMULLA, Feb 23: Almost twenty-five families on Thursday fled away in Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district following intense cross-border shelling in the area.
An official said the Pakistan troopers targeted army posts at Hatlanga, Churanda and Tika Post along the Line of Control.
"The Pakistan army started firing at around 8:00 am which was responded strongly by the soldiers manning the fence, the police official said. He said that the intensity of the cross-border shelling was such an intense as the villagers living near the borders were shifted to safety by the concerned police station.
There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing. "The situation is tense in the area," he added. Sources said that almost 25 families living in Silikote and Balakote comprising of 500 people were shifted to safer places. In view of prevailing tension and escalation on LoC, the inhabitants of Churunda, Silikote, Mothal, Hatlanga, Shoura Balkote, and Tilawari have vacated their area and are residing at Rehabilitation camp established at Govt Girls Higher Secondary School Uri.
However official further said that in order to take review of the measure and to take stock of situation and to monitor the facilities and arrangements made by Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Dr Nasir Naqash along with SSP Baramulla Mir Imtiyaz Hussain paid a visit to Uri and the affected area.
In the camp, DC and SSP interacted with the evicted people residing in the camp, different issues were brought in their notice, said official.
However DC Baramulla assured them that problem will be redressed after that a meeting of officer was held at officer club Uri, where review of situations was taken and accordingly on spot direction were passed to the concerned officer.
He said that the officers were directed to provide food for the evicted people living in the rehabilitation camp, and school authorities were directed to provide accommodations.
A control room was established to facilitate the evicted people so that they communicate with the officers, the official informed.
