Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 12: The Finance Minister and senior leader of ruling Peoples Democratic Party Dr Haseeb Drabu has paid heavily for calling spade a spade and describing Kashmir as a societal problem and not a political issue.
Drabu during a function in New Delhi had said that Kashmir "isn't a political issue."His statement had evoked sharp reaction from within his party, opposition, separatists and trade bodies.
On Sunday, the party had asked him to explain his statement, which was "contradictory" to PDP's stand. PDP Vice President Sartaj Madni had asked Drabu to retract the statement immediately.
However, Drabu remained silent thereby sticking to his statement which annoyed the PDP top brass following which he was sacked on Monday.
An analyst said, "Drabu has been sacked for putting forth his honest opinion about Kashmir being no issue. He has said in public what other Kashmiri leaders say behind closed door." The analyst said that Drabu should have been encouraged for speaking the truth and for showing the mirror to Pakistan stooges and the separatists, "Instead of being rewarded he has been punished for speaking the truth," he added.
A Kashmir watcher said, "It's unfortunate that ruling party succumbed under pressure and it went out of way to appease the separatists whose only agenda is to make their bosses, sitting across the LoC, happy."
He said, "Drabu by sticking to his statement has proved his loyalty towards the country and has set an example for the Kashmir based politicians, who despite enjoying all the benefits and privileges provided by the Government of India talk in the language of separatists."
An observer said, "All the nationalist people should stand behind Drabu for dispelling the notion that Kashmir is a political issue and for sticking to his statement. He did not change his colour like a chameleon and remained firm on his stand." He said that PDP seems to be in a "hurry." "It seems the party leadership has started believing that it cannot annoy the separatists and Pakistan that's why it sacked Drabu. By indulging in such a gesture PDP has send a message that anyone who talks about Kashmir being an integral part of India would be dealt with sternly. "One fails to understand what's wrong with PDP. It's encouraging the anti-national elements by giving them amnesty while the people who talk about J&K's merger with union of India being final are being thrown out," the observer added.
