Unanimity among people for UT status for Ladakh region, delegations tell visiting Centre's Special Representative

Ladakh, Mar 12: Several socio-political and religious delegations which called on visiting Centre's Special Representative, Dineshwar Sharma, on Sunday were almost unanimous in their demand for Union Territory (UT) status for the region. The unanimity between all these delegations for the UT status issue is indicative of its importance of the issue among the people. These delegations inter-alia demanded sanction of Central University, Medical College, empowering of LAHDC, providing of sufficient funds to the council to carry out developmental works in the region and an all weather road via Nimmu- Padum- Darcha- Shingula in Himachal Pradesh besides inclusion of Bhoti language in the VIII Schedule of Indian Constitution. Dineshwar Sharma who arrived here on Sunday morning on a four day visit to interact with different sections of the society to understand their point of view with regard to vexed Kashmir issue. This is his maiden visit of Ladakh regiion after being appointed as Centre's Special Representative for Jammu and Kashmir by the Central Government A delegation of District Congress Committee (DCC) led by Nawang Rigzin Jora, a local lawmaker and Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader in the state legislative assembly, called on Sharma Sunday evening and handed him over a memorandum demanding the reorganization of the state by carving out the area as a UT with a legislature. They put forth a slew of demands which included reduction of airfare on the Leh sector, revival of below poverty line (BPL) ration scheme for poverty stricken families and concession in Goods Service Tax (GST) for the region besides a police range for Ladakh zone. Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC-Leh. Dorjey Matop along with executive councilors also called on the Centre's Special Representative. They demanded empowering of the Council besides granting more funds for carrying out developmental works in the remote border region. The other delegations who called on Sharma included Bhartiya Janta Party BJP), Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), All Ladakh Gonpa Association, Transport Unions and ex servicemen association also met him.
BJP delegation was represented by the Member of Parliament, Thupstan Chhwang, State Minister of Cooperative and Ladakh Affairs, Chhering Dorjey Lakrook and president district unit, Tsewang Gonbo. Sharma left Monday morning for Kargil to interact with various delegations from the district. He will be returning to Leh on Tuesday before leaving for Delhi.
