| Army asks civil admin to stop constructions along National Highway | | | Saahil Suhail

ANANTNAG, Mar 22: With the administration failing to stop constructions on agriculture land along the new alignment of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the army has finally stepped in.
The army has requested Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Inspector General of Police to pass on the directions to their sub-ordinate officials for stopping the construction activity on highway.
Documents available with Early Times reveal that the issue of constructions all along the new alignment of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was discussed at Corps Group Meeting at HQ 15 Corps on 6th October last year.
The army has conveyed to civil administration that its units stationed all along the highway have done a ground recce along the alternate alignment of highway and found construction activities going on. Army has also shared photographs of shops, commercial structures and structures raised by the government and other relevant details with the civil administration.
"It is also intimated that constructions at Qazigund by pass have been reportedly regularized by the District Commissioner," reads the letter, which army has shot to civil administration. Later Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan wrote to Deputy Commissioners of Anantnag, Kulgam, and Pulwama and directed them to stop the construction activity along the new alignment of Highway besides sought a detailed report from them.
However, a spot visit found construction activity continues along the highway and administration has also failed to demolish the illegally raised structures that have come up on the both sides of highway particular on agriculture land. Khan last year in the month of December had given a week's time to Deputy Commissioners of Anantnag, Kulgam and Pulwama for demolishing the structures.
"You many recall my instructions regarding illegal construction on either side of new and old national highway, in this regard report received from police and others quarters suggest that construction activity is going on unabated. In this regard you are directed to demolish the structures raised partially and fully within one week," Div Com's Letter reads
Khan last week told Early Times that they were taking sincere and concrete steps for stopping the construction activity on highway. Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Mohammad Younis Malik, who too has sought detailed report from Tehsildars of their respective areas, said that they have demolished 22 structures raised by the violators along the highway. |
