Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 6: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti faced an angry crowd at Kangan in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Thursday during her visit to the house of Gowhar Ahmad Rather who was killed few days back in a law & order incident after protests in the area. Reports said that as soon as Mehbooba reached Kangan she was greeted by anti-government slogans with people demanding stern action against the police constable who allegedly fired upon Gowhar. Some of them even went to the extent of demanding that the cop should be hanged and that too in full public light.
Although, the CM tried her best to pacify the agitating crowd she did not succeed in the desired manner. The people were very vociferous in their demand and made it clear that they would not budge an inch in this regard. They said action against the cop would give some sense of satisfaction to them and they would feel some sort of justice has been done.
It would be in place to mention here that the Ganderbal town observed shutdown for the third consecutive day on Thursday. The authorities had imposed restrictions in the Kangan town with people including women staging peaceful protests against the killing of Gowhar. The imposition of restrictions did not stop the people in carrying out protest in support of their demand.
Reports also said that as soon as Mehbooba left the Kangan town people gave vent to their feelings and resorted to high pitch sloganeering yet again. However, the protests were peaceful and the situation by and large remained normal in Kangan and other areas of Ganderbal district. This Central Kashmir town has been witnessing stone pelting incidents of late.
The family members of Gowhar who are shell shocked said that they don't want any compensation from the government. They said that justice can be delivered only when severe punishment is awarded to constable identified as Gulzar Ahmad. They said that their son was innocent and was not part of any protest rally in the area. The CM's visit to the family of Gowhar coincided with the telephonic address of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Geelani, who heads his faction of Hurriyat Conference, addressed the bereaved family and other people present at the house of Rathers' through the medium of cell phone. He blamed the mainstream politicians for the death of 'innocents' in Kashmir valley.
Gowhar had sustained grievous injuries on Monday (April 2) and was admitted to SKIMS-Soura where he succumbed a day later. Although, the police claimed that Gowhar got injured after falling down from a wall the locals contested the same. They said that the youth was hit by a bullet and suffered fatal injuries.
