Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 10: The national highway, the only road connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, and 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed due to landslides and fresh snowfall.
Despite heavy rain, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic for two-way Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), while heavy vehicles will ply one-way only on Tuesday.
Due to continued intermittent rain and snow at several places during the past 36 hours, the Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch remained closed for the second day today on Tuesday, a traffic police official told
However, he said the authorities have already started work to remove the landslides and open the road. But, he said, traffic on the road will be resumed only after receiving green signal, he said . However, only one-way traffic will be allowed to ply on the road which is still narrow at some places as huge snow walls could be seen on both sides of the road.
Meanwhile, the national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir was closed for traffic following avalanche at Captain Mode and fresh snowfall at Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia. There was fresh snowfall at Sonmarg, Zojila and Meenmarg early this morning. The BRO has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway. We allowed traffic on the highway for some time yesterday, he said adding today a fresh message was received from to suspend traffic.
\Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was plying from both sides for Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) despite rain during the past 24 hours.
Traffic is plying normally on the highway today also, he said, adding that Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) will continue to ply from only one-way. Today HMVs will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no HMV will be allowed from opposite direction, he said. But, he said, passengers, drivers and truckers, are requested to contact TCUs in Srinagar, Jammu and other places before undertaking the journey on the highway.
