SHO takes graft to release Jammu trader from custody
Trader to pay monthly cash instalment
4/10/2018 10:39:39 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 10: A Station House Officer (SHO) posted in district Jammu first took a leading businessman of his area into custody on the pretext that the latter is indulging in illegal trade practices and then released him only after striking a hefty financial deal.
However, according to sources, it was not the one time and final settlement of the money exchanging hands as provisions of the pact between the police officer and the businessman also included that the businessman will make pay on monthly basis.
In this way, the SHO initially managed to amass a huge amount from the businessman in lieu of his release but also ensured that a fixed amount reaches him on monthly basis. "The SHO acted smartly as he not only collected huge cash from the businessman but also told the latter in clear terms that if he wishes to operate his trade in a hassle-free manner then he has to pay a fixed monthly instalment in cash," said sources. They said that a few days ago the SHO conducted a raid on the warehouse of the said businessman on the basis of information that a huge stock of illegal polythene bags was dumped there. During the raid, recovery of polythene bags was made and the businessman was taken to the police station.
"Though the businessman was brought to the police station in the afternoon, a case was registered only in the night. Following this, the SHO made a series of raids on the other business premises of the trader in order to coerce and harass him," said sources.
Sources said that later the SHO started to play legal games with the businessman as he registered a normal case against him so as to show to his seniors that he is taking corrective action against the trader for his illegalities. But the same night several recommendations in favour of the businessman started to pour in which ultimately led to an amicable deal.
Under the deal, the businessman was provided with all the facilities in the police station and the next morning his bail was also arranged.
This way, the SHO not only presented himself as an epitome of honesty and truth in front of his officers but also managed to take huge money from the businessman, said sources adding that the police station incharge took Rs 2 lakh as graft to release the trader from custody.
