World famous Basohli art faces official apathy
4/10/2018 11:44:16 PM

Early Times Report
KATHUA, Apr 10: Ancient Basohli art is dying by the day, thanks to the official indifference.
The successive governments, after independence, totally failed to pay attention to promote over 800-year-old Basholi art. This art was so famous that its artefacts are lying in the British Museum and other world famous museums.
Since independence, all governments were Kashmir-centric, so they did not pay any attention towards promotion of Basohli miniature art.
Due to failure of government to pay attention to world famous Basohli art, a local NGO has taken an onus in this regard, but due to lack of resources it is facing difficulties in promoting the same.
Though the NGO has made many requests to government for help and support, the latter failed to come forward to provide financial assistance to NGO so that it can succeed in its mission.
The NGO is training some students to revive the art and take it to future generations.
Prior to independence the Basohli art had become so famous that tourists from India and abroad were attracted by it and they used to visit Basholi from Himachal through the cable bridge on Ravi at Basohli .
But what has been a cause of concern that local representatives of the area also failed to take an initiative in this regard over the years.
Had the government been so interested in promotion of Basohli art it would have opened a school of fine arts in Basohli so that it could reach younger generations and become a means of livelyhood to people of the area.
