Salman Khurshid's statement is a death warrant for Congress
4/27/2018 10:28:37 PM
Though the media was blamed for dis
torting the statement of senior Congress leader and former union Minister, Salman Khurshid, the damage for the Congress was quite evident. That too when the Assembly elections are round the corner in some states and the next General election is due in 2019.It is strange that the Congress has been banking on the support of muslim vote bank in various parts of the country and the crisp statement of Salman Khurshid is a bolt from the blue for the Congress. The damage has been done despite Khurshid's vehement denial. The Congress felt peeved over the statement of senior party leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid saying the party had Muslims' blood on its hands. The party was quick to distance itself from the remarks, saying Khurshid's views were personal, even as the party leader later tweeted that the media had distorted his statement. But the damage has been done because Salman Khurshid does not trigger controversies by issuing off the cuff statements. Whether the Congress describes the statement of Salman Khurshid as his personal view and not that of the party the Congress is in for trouble even if Salman Khurshid alleged that his statement has been distorted.
"The Congress disagrees with his statement...It is his personal view, not the party's," Congress spokesperson PL Punia said. Speaking at an event at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Khurshid admitted to Congress' lapses during communal riots under its rule. He was responding to a query by a student as to how the Congress would wash off the "blood stains" of Muslims from its hands. The question from the student was relevant and the answer from Khurshid too was crisp and meaningful to the extent that the statement has hit the Congress below the belt. What does Salman Khurshid's statement hold for the Congress ? It holds a potential block for the entire muslims to vote for the Congress whether in Assembly election or the Lok Sabha poll. A statement that would delight the BJP to the extent that its leaders have started counting number of communal riots that took place during the Congress rule. Salman Khurshid is a truthful muslim who does not shirk to share any blame that has fallen on the Congress.
And only a leader like Salman Khurshid can have guts to answer the question that was posed by a student of the AMU. "It is a political question. There is blood on our hands. I am also a part of the Congress so let me say it, we have blood on our hands. Is this why you are trying to tell us that if someone attacks you, we must not come forward to protect you," Khurshid asked. His remarks went viral on the social media, raising a storm, a storm in the Congress circles. His remarks were bent to harm the Congress because Khurshid is a learned man and does not tell lies.
The BJP latched onto Khurshid's remarks with Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi raking up a number of riots, including the Bhiwandi, Bhagalpur and Malegaon riots besides the 1984 anti-Sikhs riots to convince the vote bank of the Congress that the party led by Rahul Gandhi is not free of sins of triggering communal violence. Even if the Congress expels Salman Khurshid his statement is a death warrant for the Congress. And if Salman is thrown out of the Congress it may not wash blood of muslims as recounted by Salman Khurshid. And his expulsion from the Congress may add to the problems for the Congress.
