Srinagar on alert after militant movement
4/29/2018 11:07:54 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 29: The summer capital of Srinagar is on alert in the wake of militant movement on the high security Airport Road, official sources said.
Sources said since April 25, when the heavily armed gunmen disarmed a police post near the Police Headquarter at Hyderpora, the city has been put on high alert.
On the fateful night, around seven militants had stormed the police post in the fortified area. Officials said it was for the first time in the recent past that such a big number of militants had been spotted in the area, which is among the most secured zones of the summer capital.
"Given its proximity to the Srinagar airport and the national highway coupled with the VIP movement, this area is on the top priority of security agencies. Such a big number of militants making their presence felt is a matter of concern," said a senior police official on the condition of anonymity.
He said till now the police was expecting that the area to be most peaceful. "But the sudden movement of militants has made us reconsider our observation," the official said.
He said the security has been heightened in the entire city in the wake of militant activity.
Sources said the police and paramilitary camps in the city have been asked to be extra cautious as there was a chance of militant attack.
Besides, the roadside nakas have been intensified with squads of the Special Operations Group of police ready to execute any counter insurgency operations.
Sources said the day and night vigil has been intensified. "The mobile bunkers have been asked to keep changing their position on hourly basis," the sources said.
Sources said the Inspector General of Police Kashmir range is closely monitoring the situation while the meeting with the Army was in the offing to decide future course of action.
A senior police official said the forces were ready to face any eventuality and that efforts were on to keep militants away from Srinagar. "We have intensified checking on entry points into Srinagar lest they enter the city."
