Basohli a Politically orphaned constituency
Shiv Kumar Padha Basohli5/28/2018 12:15:40 AM
The people of Jammu and Kashmir often consider Basohli as
the most lucky constituency which, unlike other constituencies of the state, is cared and looked after not by one but by three MLAs of the adjacent constituencies. People are right in their thinking because the elected MLA of BAsohli is an outsider, the MLA of Billawer though a native of Basohli tehsil/ constituency has got his interest in the constituency which he represents, whereas the MLA of Bani belongs to his parent tehsil but shares the roads and the resources only with Basohli. But the irony is neither the MLAs of Billawer and of Bani want to do anything for Basohli nor the elected MLA, an outsider, allows others to do anything for Basohli constituency with the result there is nothing visible on ground except the tall and vociferous claims of the local MLA. More than three years on after the formation of the coalition government in the state, not even a single minister of any department has been either invited or has visited Basohli at his own to hold public durbar for on the spot solutions of the most important genuine problems of the people.
Perhaps Basohli is the only constituency in the state which tempts every politician, having money and muscle power, to contest election from there. The name of Basohli salivate the politicians eager to grab the constituency in the elections. It pains to say that the politicians from other constituencies namely from Kathua tehsil have been representing Basohli in the legislative assembly for the last six decades. Had the Basohli Constituency been represented by the local MLA since independence the whole developmental scenario of the constituency would have been very encouraging. But as the ill luck would have it the whole constituency is made to suffer under the yoke of the outsider shrewd politicians who instead of planning for the development converted Basohli in their colony and paved the way for their successive generations to reach the parlors of power. Some, so called, political stalwarts and iconic figures of Jammu and Kashmir politics hijacked the constituency and made its voters the hostages forever by tailoring the Basohli constituency in such a way which on the one hand blocked the way of Basolites leading to the state assembly and on the other facilitated their own victory in the elections without any resistance from the localities. For making the Basohli constituency their ancestral property for ever they managed the attachment of 12 patwars, 28 polling stations and 25 highly populated villages of Kandi belt falling under Kathua tehsil with the Basohli constituency. For their personal aggrandizement they snatched the opportunities of contesting the assembly elections from the local youngsters by pushing them to the wall forever. 66 years after independence only three local MLA's could represent Basohli constituency for only 15 years with first two Mahant Ram Sharma (congress) and Mahesh Chandersharma (prajaparishad) for 5 and 2 years respectively during fifties and the present JagdishSpolia from BJP with his total tenor of 8 (6+2) years till date. If we compare Basohli constituency with its counterparts in the state we find it quite behind in the field of employment, education, health, connectivity, industries, agriculture and handicraft. The most important factor considered responsible for the progress and development of a constituency depends upon the sympathy, sincerity, and belongingness of the persons representing it. But it is experienced that the main motive of the outsiders representing the constituency has always been to grind about their own axis, feather their own nests and ultimately reach the corridors of power.
The people living in Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed unprecedented development of those places which were once considered as inaccessible even for the animals and the birds. These places have been very developed easily by the political and individual commitment of their local representatives. Even six decades after independence the natives of the constituency are reeling under illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, lack of connectivity, lack of health and medical facilities, shortage of power and drinking water supply. There are no poverty eliminating schemes, parks, play grounds, small scale industries and skill development programs for the youth in the constituency because the MLAs who didn't belong to the constituency never bothered about it. The patwars and villages of Kandi belt of tehsil Kathua have been deciding the fate of the Basohli constituency in the past and is still considered as the game changer/king maker in the state. We often exhibit pride of being the biggest democracy in the world but who knows that there is still a constituency Basohli in jammu and Kashmir which is hijacked and its voters are made hostages by the powerful, criminal and influential political leaders for their personal benefit.
The people of Basohli constituency were hopeful that this time they will be represented by their own MLA but due to the erroneous, faulty, prejudiced way of allotting mandate an out sider again managed the mandate lock stock and barral with the result the people of Basohli constituency were again compelled to accept subjugation of a person who considered Basohlites as the third class citizens of the state. The budding generation scolds their elders for not giving a tough fight to the intruders who have made basohlites orphans and slaves by the democratic government. The new people friendly coalition government is requested to put to an end the democratic fraud which the Basohli people have been tolerating since independence by detaching 12 patwars, 28 polling stations and 25 villages of Kandi belt of tehsil Kathua from the Basoli constituency unnecessarily attached for the personal benefit of some influential politicians.
