Early Times Report
Kishtwar, May 31: The under construction Iron and Steel bridge over Chenab at Banderkoot today morning buckled as a result of which the bridge was tilted on one side while the shafts and pillars on the parallel side got dislocated making the bridge hang in air.
The bridge is part of under Kishtwar-Chatroo-Sinthan-Anantnag National Highway and is being constructed by the Chenab Valley Power Project Corporation Limited, a joint venture between the state government and NHPC as a part of Social Corporate Sector Responsibility.
The bridge would provide help to transport heavy machinery for 1000 MW Pakal-Dool Power Project inaugurated last week by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As per the details available with "Early Times", the work on Bhandarkoot Bridge being built with an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crores had been started last year and only a few days ago Power Minister Sunil Sharma along with CVPP officials and other senior officials visited the spot to inspect the construction work which is schedule to be completed by August-September this year
Ganesh Chander who was present with the labourers said that the bridge collapsed in the morning at around 5.30 am today added that he did not how it happens. He said that Satvir Gupta from Jammu is the contractor added that Engineer of the company only yesterday left for Jammu and tried to dodge the Early Times questions over the major tragedy which was averted due to non execution of work at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile an employee of CVPP, a monitoring agency termed it as non issue added that this incident happens during the pre-execution work on Iron and steel bridges. He said that within next 2-3 days, it will be revived, further adding that all the Engineering staff was present at the site throughout day today.
It is pertinent to mention that Bandarkoot bridge provides the main connectivity to the half of the population of the district Kishtwar and it is the only passage to cross famous river Chenab in the district thus connecting the people of the area to the other side of the world. The new bridge will replace the outdated wooden bridge constructed some four decades ago.
