Rise in molestation cases in GMC Jammu
6/1/2018 12:20:45 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 31: For past few years, it appears that the Government Medical College and Hospital and other hospitals in the state are not good for women staff because of rising cases of molestation.
But most of the molestation cases go unreported because of threats and harassment or cover up by the management of the respective hospitals as well as influential persons.
Recently, an alleged molestation case came to light on May 29, when four to five staff nurses of an ICU rushed to the room of concerned CMO of the hospital and narrated the horror tale. They said that a staff employee, under the influence of alcohol, had not only harassed the nurses but also allegedly molested them.
An official seeking anonymity told Early Times that the cases of harassment and alleged molestation was compromised with the help of some influential persons who are working in the hospital, exposing the real face the hospitals which are not safe for women.
Earlier, a similar incident had happened in the month of September 2017, in the main Operation Theatre of a department of the GMC&H. A doctor, who was the henchman of the then a minister, had reportedly misbehaved with OT nurse. The doctor threatened her of dire consequences including suspension and transfer from the OT.
Source stated that both cases were compromised, sending a direct message to staff that no strict action would be taken against such incident. Besides, this type of practice has been going on in the hospitals for last many years, but no one has dared to take action.
Due to casual approach, numbers of cases go unreported.
