Strong winds, hail damage fruit crops in valley | Women killed after tree fell on her | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, June 5: A strong windstorm accompanied by heavy rains lashed many parts of north Kashmir including Baramulla, Pattan, Sopore, Rafiabad on Tuesday afternoon, breaking the heat spell of the past around one month. The sudden change in the weather occurred a day after the local Metrological department declared heat wave in Kashmir, the heavy rains accompanied by the blustery winds Tuesday brought relief to the people from heat, but also caused extensive damage to fruit crops. According to reports wind-storm, hailstorm started which continued for ten to fifteen minutes in many parts of Baramulla district on Tuesday afternoon, reports said that the visibility started improving with the fall of heavy rain in the area. Reports said that heavy rains lashed Pattan and Sopore areas providing much needed relief to the people from scorching heat wave that continued in the Kashmir for the past month. However stormy winds followed by heavy hailstorm caused extensive damage to orchards and vegetable crop fields in different areas of north Kashmir. Famers and apple growers have suffered extensive damage in their orchards and other crops adding to their woes. Many trees including mighty popular trees were uprooted and their branches broken. Sources said that a woman was killed after mighty Poplar tree fell on her in Kachwa Muqam in Wagoora thesil of Baramulla district. She was identified as Hajira Begum (55) w/o Ghulam Rasool Mir a resident of Kachwa Muqam. Sources said that the woman was planting paddy saplings in the nearby fields when gusty winds uprooted a poplar tree which fell on her. She was immediately rushed to SDH Kreeri where from she was referred to SMHS Hospital Srinagar where she succumbed, sources informed. |
