HM Rajnath granted amnesty to stone- pelters on the advice of interlocutor
After amnesty, now Kashmiri sentiments
6/6/2018 12:10:52 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 5: One thing appears almost clear now: It was on the suggestion of the Government of India's Special Representative Dineshwar Sharma, former Intelligence Bureau Director, that Home Minister Rajnath Singh permitted J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti to grant amnesty to nearly 10,000 stone-pelters. What happened thereafter is not a secret as results are there on the ground for everyone to see. Suffice to say that the decision of the Union Government has only helped forces inimical to India to use the amnesty to cause more bloodshed and mayhem.
As if what happened in Kashmir after the grant of amnesty to stone-pelters was not enough to satisfy this interlocutor, he has now come out with another suggestion. His suggestion is that it was time New Delhi addressed sentiments of Kashmiris.
"Sentiments have to be addressed and the level of violence in the Valley has to be brought down before any political dialogue can be initiated. The biggest challenge in Kashmir today is to calm down the sentiments of the people, particularly youth," he on Monday said during an interview.
"As far as the sentiment in Kashmir is concerned, it can be addressed only if we embrace people with an open heart, about which our Prime Minister and Home Minister have already talked…More Kashmiri people, including youth, should visit other parts of the country and they should be shown the same love and affection so that they get a feeling of belonging to the nation. Similarly, more people from the rest of the country should visit J&K, see its natural beauty, and enjoy the affection and hospitality of the local people," he was also quoted as saying.
"Unless we are able to address sentiments and bring down violence, it will be difficult to think about any political dialogue, any political solution. First, we have to somehow ensure that peace comes. Only then can any political dialogue start. So let us first address the sentiment and bring down tempers…I fully agree it is a chicken and egg situation - whether the situation needs to calm to begin a political dialogue or the start of a political dialogue helps calm the situation. But I think we need to curtail the anger, bring down the violence first," he further said.
The interlocutor's remarks came two days ahead of Home Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to J&K. It will starts on June 7. During his visit, he will review, among other things, the suspension of security operations for Ramzan.
What is this Kashmiri sentiment? What more do the Kashmiri people want? Does he mean greater autonomy or self-rule or azadi? These questions arise because Kashmir has already been at the helm of affairs in the state since 1947 with Jammu and Ladakh being treated as Kashmir's colonies and people of these two colonized reasons leading a life of servitude. The interlocutor's suggestion is nothing but a manifestation of appeasement. The worst part of the whole situation is that it's all happening under the nose of the BJP, which used to call itself as messiah of Jammu and Ladakh and an ardent votary of the state's full integration into India.
